Application of Filigrana Design

Starting in the back and building forward, apply Filigrana to leaves, buds, strawberries then calyx. Thin the Filigrana to a proper consistency to allow you to apply in a smooth manner. Build up the edges and overlaps to appear 3-dementional. When working the center design start with the branch, then add the leaves, buds, and lemons. When application is complete, smooth with brush and water if necessary.

Application of Color  Strawberry Clusters

Leaves: Block in with 2 coats of Green Pea. Fully load the shader with Green Pea and side load with Grass Green to shade the edges of the leaves. Add a shadow of Light Brown Bisque Stroke in center of each leaf.

Blossoms: Water load and side load the shader with a mixture of Canary Yellow/Green Pea=Chartreuse and with a “W” stroke shade around the center of the buds. Cover the centers with Canary Yellow and shade the bottom with Tangerine Red and add a shadow of Light Brown Bisque Stroke to shadow.

Strawberries: Apply 1 coat of Canary Yellow followed by 1 thin coat of Tangerine Red. Leave an area in the top left of the berry for a highlight and block in the rest of the berry with 2 coats of Tangerine Red. Fully load the shader with Tangerine Red and side load in Dark Red, then shade the outer edge of the berry. Shadow this with Light Brown.

Calyx: Apply a wash of Grass Green the calyx leaves and shadow one side with Indigo.

Application of Color  Lemon Design

Branch: Apply a wash coat of Light Brown then shade bottom edge with Detailing Brown.

Leaves: Block in with Green Pea and shade with Grass Green as above, then shadow with Indigo.

Blossoms: Highlight petals with Canary Yellow/Green Pea mixture as above. Add Canary Yellow to centers and stipple with dots of Light Brown and Detailing Brown.

Lemons: Block in with 2 coats of Canary Yellow. Load the # 12 shader with Canary Yellow, side load with Light Brown then shade the left side of the lemon. Reload with Canary Yellow, side load with Green Pea then shade the right side of the lemons

Outlining and Detail

Thin the Detailing Brown and with a fine liner outline the design adding the details to the leaves and berries. Add the curling tendrils and connect the strawberry clusters with wavy lines. Add an edge of Detailing Brown to the plate using the banding wheel. Allow drying time.

Firing

When applying a decoration or design using the Filigrana separate or in combination with Engobe Colors it is advisable to fire at this point. This will mature the Filigrana and or the Engobe Colors. A slow fire to 06 is adequate.

Glaze

With a soft fan glaze brush apply 2 coats of Transparent Glaze to the entire plate, top and bottom.  Dry foot by removing the glaze from the rim that will sit on the shelf when firing.

Firing

Note the change of firing temperature.  Fire to witness cone 07 with a 20-minute hold.
