| Welcome to the world of using commercial quality glazes. Colorobbia® has manufactured glazes for over 90 years, having to meet the
demands from artists and commercial finishedware manufacturers world wide. With a
long history of producing glazes that perform with excellence on functional table top and
ovenware, we are proud to offer these exact same glazes in smaller quantity packaging.
With hobby Colorobbia, you will not be working with facsimiles of production glazes, but
the real product that is used on low fire production ware sold commercially through out
the world.
The following information and test techniques, will help you in learning to
use hobby Colorobbia commercial quality production glazes.
Table top and ovenware, should be substantial in weight /thickness. 1/4 to 3/8 inch
is desirable when casting your earthenware. ( low fire clay)
You must begin with 04 bisque.
The Commercial HC0147 Base Arctic White Glaze is very concentrated and is formulated for fast drying. This product has several technical applications, however we are covering the technique of brushing here. Always shake the glaze in the jar before proceeding .
The base glaze HC0147 Arctic White, for brushing should be the consistency of whole milk. Add water at any time to maintain whole milk consistency of the glaze.
Never Begin With Dry Bisque
You may have heard that you should wipe your bisque with a damp sponge. But what you
really need to do is add some moisture to your bisque. Adding moisture allows the
commercial glaze to flow easily with smooth even strokes.
Adding moisture is totally different then wiping with a damp sponge. So make sure your
sponge is well dampened, you should clearly see the water going into the bisque, causing a
color difference from dry to wet.
Add Moisture To Your Bisque
Florentines Design Glazes are true gloss glazes, if you apply 3 coats to bisque the results would be a semi-transparent gloss finish.
In this technique we will be using these beautiful colors for decorating on top of the Arctic White Base. The Florentine are true colors, and the stark whiteness of the base
glaze increases their brilliance on the finished ware. Round natural hair, or a fan, goat hair brushes are recommended for applying the Florentines. These brushes allow you to naturally lay down more color with each stroke.
Florentines should be the consistency of dairy half and half for the application atop the Arctic White Base.
What Would You Like To Do?
You may apply 3 even coats of this consistency for solid coverage within a design atop the Arctic White Base.
You may apply brush strokes with this consistency atop the Artic White Base.
You may shade with this consistency by double loading your brush and applying atop your previous coat of Florentine.
Would You Like A Water Color Decorating Effect?
Florentines are great for water color effects, but you must change the consistency of the Florentine Glaze on your tile.
For a water color background the consistency of your Florentine should be skim milk. Dont worry about the color fading. Watercolor effects with Florentines result in beautiful hues of the original color.
Natural Air Drying Is Best
Allow your ware to dry completely before firing to witness cone 06.
Commercial Glazes Put You In Control The Artic White Base can be combined with any of the Florentines to create 100s of custom colors that are Non Toxic and Food Safe.
FIRING:
Make sure your firing habits are up to date and follow these guidelines for perfection in your finished wares.
Recommended firing temperature is cone 06. There are two popular ways to achieve the witness cone 06 temperatures.
One method of firing is to program your kiln for a cone 06 firing, which will bring your kiln to temperature, shut off and then cool.
The second method is to program your kiln for a cone 07 firing with a 20-25 minutes hold (this will vary with the volume of ware in the kiln), and this will produce a perfect witness cone 06.
Note: You can drop the temperature of your firing from cone 06 to 07 because the hold time at the end allows the glazes more time in there molten state to smooth out and fit the ware surface. We recommend the second procedure for the very best finishes on glaze surface.
Using the hold at the end of your firing results in a superior finish with all non-toxic glazes.
Using Commercial Arctic White from hobby Colorobbia.
Follow the care and use directions below for many years of service from your Ovenware. The same care instructions are found, accompanying commercially manufactured low fired ovenware.
Never place your bake ware directly from the refrigerator or freezer into a hot oven. This includes placing frozen food directly into your earthenware and placing into a hot oven.
Your bake ware should never be placed directly on a stove burner, gas or electric. Nor over an open sterno flame.
When removing from the oven, place ware on a folded towel, pot holder, or metal rack.
Allow the ware to cool to room temperature before rinsing in cold water. Your ware can be cleaned in a dishwasher, however its recommended that you wash by hand to avoid bumping against other items during the washing cycle. Never leave your bake ware soaking in water.
Micro-waving is not recommended.
