Fired Precious Metals

Hobby COLOROBBIA’s C/A Shiny Gold and PAX Shiny Platinum are liquid bright metals used to decorate glazed ceramics and porcelain. They are known for the easy application and forgiving qualities even when applied by beginners. When these products are applied by brush, they produce a smooth and homogeneous surface upon application and have rich solid finishes after firing. These metals are also ideal for application when applied using a banding wheel.

1) Always prepare glazed surface for application by wiping down with a lint free cloth or coffee filter to remove dust and any oils that might be on the glaze surface from handling.

2) Slightly warm the piece by setting in the sunlight or use a hair dryer, this will help the gold flow and smooth out easier than on a cool surface.

3) Hold the bottle of gold or platinum in the palm of your hand to warm slightly before application, this also helps the product flow on easier.

4) Use a new brush or one that is reserved for gold or platinum application to help from contaminating the product.

5) Apply precious metals as smoothly and with as few strokes of the brush as possible, for even application.

NOTE: Clean brush using DIL 694 Brush Cleaner, and wipe on a clean coffee filter. Repeat several times until brush is completely clean. When brush is dry store in a dust free place such as a plastic bag which can be sealed until it is needed for application again.

6) Allow gold to dry completely before firing.

7) Make sure that gold has plenty of ventilation when firing. Place items in the kiln so there is plenty of space around each piece and make sure kiln shelves are not placed too closely together which can cause smothering.

NOTE: When gold or platinum are smothered, the finish looks smoked or as if it has a film over it. It can be re-applied and re-fired with better ventilation.

The general firing range of the gold and platinum is witness cone 019-018 in a well vented kiln. Precious metals are available in 2 gram bottles for the convenience of students , but is also available for special orders in 10gram, 20gram and 100gram bottles.
