| hobby COLOROBBIAs Bisque Stroke underglaze colors (series 400) are highly
concentrated underglaze pigments specifically designed for application on mature bisque.
Glaze is then applied and the item is fired to the maturing temperature of the glaze
,usually to witness cone 05-07. Bisque firing the colors prior to glazing is not necessary,
nor recommended. Just use caution in the glaze application. We suggest a Soft Fan brush
for brush glaze application or dip glaze the item(s). Because the Bisque Stroke
underglazes have such a wide variety of uses, the consistency is adjusted according to the
technique being used. Bisque Stroke underglazes are also traditionally used for design
work over unfired HC-0147 Arctic White glaze and then fired. This technique in hobby
ceramics is referred to as Maiolica (Majolica). One color in the Bisque Stroke series has
special characteristics HC-0440 Copper Green. This color is black in the bottle not green
as the name implies. The color of Copper Green changes according to application. A thin
application will give a turquoise color, a medium application gives green and a heavier
application gives a metallic finish like gunmetal.
PREPARATION: Shake bottle well.
Check for correct consistency. Bisque Stroke vary in consistency. Most colors are ready to
use directly from the jar. If thinning of Bisque Stroke underglazes is needed, add a few
drops of water and stir to mix thoroughly. For certain techniques thinning can be done
with HC-0001 Transparent glaze. This is usually done when the colors need to have a more
sheer appearance and when used in the maiolica technique.
WARE PREPARATION: Working on bisque, lightly wipe piece (s) down with a damp sponge to
remove dust, and to add a bit of moisture so the color will flow on smoothly.
Application methods as follows:
BRUSH WORK: Mix Bisque Stroke underglazes, as mentioned in Preparation to
the proper consistency for the technique. Load brush with conditioned underglaze. Apply
strokes to mature bisque. If the brush drags the color is still too thick, thin a little
more. When design is finished, glaze with a transparent clear or transparent colored glaze
and fire to the maturing temperature of the glaze usually witness cone 06.
SPONGING: Squeeze color onto a palette (glazed tile) or into a shallow container. For
veiling: Dip slightly dampened sponge into the color and then lightly pounce sponge onto a
clean section of the palette to remove some of the color, which will open the pours of the
sponge. Then lightly pounce the sponge to the surface of the ware leaving a veiling of
color only one application is used for veiling unless a two-tone effect is desired. Allow
to dry apply glaze and fire.
ANTIQUING: Mix the Bisque Stroke underglaze with water to achieve a thin wash
consistency. Apply conditioned color to mature bisque using a large a brush as possible.
Use a clean, damp sponge to wipe the piece down, leaving the color in the crevices. Keep
the sponge clean at all times to insure clean highlights. When piece is dry glaze with
transparent clear or transparent colored glaze and fire to the maturing temperature of the
glaze. |
